Donna Huyber is very good at her job—so good that she recently received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.
It’s a job she loves, and the best part is being with the children every day. She plans to stay at Lakeview until she retires.
Her centre is in a rural community. It accommodates weekly enrolment, different groupings of children according to their numbers and interests at any given time, extended evening hours during harvest time, and a year-round nursery school program.
Lakeview is operated by the Childcare Family Access Network (C-FAN), a non-profit organization that develops and operates child care, parent and child, and nursery school programs in rural Manitoba.
As program supervisor, Donna reports to the centre director and is responsible for scheduling children and staff, all art activities, payroll and maintaining the diaper charts on the younger children.
During her 13 years at Lakeview, Donna has continued to pursue job training, mainly through distance learning. The government and her employer have paid for much of her training. She now has her ECE III credential, as well as a special needs certificate.
