Occupational Standards for Early Childhood Educators (2010)

This project ran from September 2008 - October 2010. Building on the previous set of Occupational Standards for Child Care Practitioners developed by the Canadian Childcare Federation in 2003, this project focused on:

  • Updating the Occupational Standards to ensure that they accurately captured changes in the ECE occupation since 2003 and fully document all knowledge, skills, and abilities required to work effectively as an ECE.
  • Defining the core occupation in ECEC and identifying any additional or emerging issues such as: school-age care, infant care and family care.
  • Increasing access to, and availability of, tools designed to support skills development in the ECE occupation.
  • Identifying perceived gaps between current training of ECEs and the core occupation in ECE.

This project led to the creation of four major resources:

  1. Occupational Standards for Early Childhood Educators
  2. Updated Occupational Standards for ECEs Task Chart identifying tasks added or expanded on in the Infant Care and School-Age Care Profiles (Coming soon)
  3. Occupational Standards for Early Childhood Educators: How-To Guide
  4. Occupational Standards for Early Childhood Educators: Training Gaps Analysis (Coming soon)

Please note that the 2012 Occupational Standards: ECE Profiles & Administrator Update project led the creation of two profiles that compliment and expand on the Occupational Standards for ECEs, the Infant Care Profile and the School-Age Care Profile.
